Titles tend to be difficult for me.
Anyway, I thought I'd try a speedpaint in Photoshop. I also figured I'd give those brush things a try, because I've been using the default brushes so far. So, I downloaded a brush set by Luis Phelipe, [link]

There was a tree brush that I thought looked better as clouds, so I made some clouds with it. ;)
This was intended to be a speedpaint, but I spent several hours tweaking the composition and color balance.

I'm sure the distant dragon was inspired by some of the awesome dragons drawn by
:iconvampireprincess007:

Like usual, I might upload retouched versions, if I decide to improve on this. :)

Cloudscape

Another quick practice piece. I'm back from the fencing tournament, and spent most of the plane ride looking out the window, studying the clouds.
So, I had to draw some. :D
The clouds were the quickest part of this piece, by far, but I think they turned out well. I did have to re-draw them a few times to get them right, but I'm glad I did.

The clouds on the bottom use the same method that I used in my last picture. I tried to make the ones on the top more feathery to represent cirrus clouds. The floating town was fun, too. I usually find forests, or natural backgrounds to be a bit easier, so this was a good challenge. I'm especially proud of how that sundial, and the stairs turned out.

Also, Pahul [link] helped me out with a rather helpful redline. That improved the composition and perspective in this piece rather nicely.

Evening Flight - Temeraire

This is what I've been working on lately. A while back, I decided to use one of the backgrounds from my quick sketches, and turn it into a piece of fanart.

I was having some difficulty making a sketch that I found satisfying, and I was searching for some new fantasy novels to read. I found out about Temeraire from the contest, and those books really hit the spot. :)

Lawrence is in there, too. If you can find him. I tried to size him appropriately. ;)

The color scheme is one of my favorites, but it is one I have used before. The bright warm and cool colors looked much better on this picture than earthy tones. I'll have to make another one that uses those colors soon. Maybe I'll do some more speedpaints for a while.
There might be one more piece of fanart coming, too.

Buildings are one of my weak areas, but I think they turned out decently well in this one. I tried to use a bit more perspective and straighter lines. Comments and criticism are always welcome. :D

Edit: Improved building textures, using a brick texture from [link]

One More Chapter -Temeraire

"Oh, it's still light out. Isn't there time for just one more chapter?"

Books and dragons. :D I've used those in plenty of art before, and it is a theme that I enjoy, so I found Temeraire's love of books quite entertaining.

This is the second piece of fanart I was working on. I actually finished it last night, just before the contest deadline. :D
I did have to rush it a bit to finish on time, though. Normally I spend much longer on these sorts of pictures. This certainly wasn't a speedpaint, but it was a quicker piece. I might have to go back over it again and refine the scale texture a bit more sometime.

Comments and criticism are always welcome. :D
Edit: Improved the eye, and right front paw slightly.

Major edit: Changed the coloring. I think this color scheme looks quite a bit better on this picture. I've fixed several small errors, improved the lighting, and put a bit more coloring on Temeraire's pendant. Overall, I'm much happier with this piece now, even if the lines are still rather thick. :)

I've been working on several sketches lately, some with line art, some without. After the rushed line art on my last picture, I thought I'd take my time with this one, to add in some finer detail and hopefully take the quality of my art up another step. :)

I've uploaded the line art for coloring here : [link]

I also tried to add some more texture, in the brushes I used, and in how I spaced out the various details in the picture. Overall, I'm rather happy with how this picture turned out. :D
Comments and criticism are always welcome!

Major Edit: Brightness Correction
I got to take a look at this one on a different computer, and it looked quite different. I played around with the lighting a bit more, and I think it looks much better now.

Time for more art! :D
This one took a bit longer than my last few. I remembered to check this one with a few different color profiles before submitting it this time, so hopefully I won't have to make my usual flurry of edits.

I tried to use a softer texture this time around. The glowing scales and colors were especially fun to use. :)

Random landscape time!
This is a much quicker piece than my last two. I've been getting frustrated with some of the line art on one of the pictures I'm working on, so I thought I'd make a quick sketch, and play around with brushes and unwind a little.
I liked how the sketch looked, so I put a some more time into it, to polish it up a little. :)

A few people have been asking me about the brushes I've been using. The brushes I used in this picture for the pine trees in the background, and the tree leaves are from this pack: [link]

It was quite a fun exercise. Comments and criticism are always welcome. :D

Winter Flight

Sometimes I hate coming up with titles...
Anyway, this is another piece for that calendar project. I don't think I've ever tried drawing a snowy scene before, even though I tend to enjoy snow quite a bit.

So, I looked up a bunch of references of snowy landscapes and mountains, and tried to use what I learned to make some art. :)

I lightened up the dragon a little, too. Hopefully it looks like a very light blue or white dragon. White and black tend to be difficult for me, so this piece was a lot of fun in that respect, as well.

Comments and criticism welcome, like always. :D
Now, I just need to find some time to finish all the other promising sketches I have set aside...

Village Guardian -V2-

This is a remake of my original Village Guardian piece. [link]

It is a special picture to me, because I think it marks a turning point in my art. Many of the techniques I've been observing and practicing came together well in that piece. :la:
I still really enjoy the composition and concept, but it was looking a little dated next to my recent art, so I thought I would re-draw the picture, using the things I've learned over the last year and a half.

I made it wider, too. ;)
Enjoy!

2010 Calander of Art

Well, I've finished preparing a selection of my art from 2010, in calendar form. Picking the pieces that I wanted to include was rather difficult. They are not in order. I tried to position them in a way that balances out the calendar. I didn't quite make my Christmas goal, but better late than never. ;)

I think a seasonal theme would have probably worked better, but I had several people ask about some of these pictures, and did not have time to complete a seasonal picture for each month. That will be one of my goals for the coming year.

I'm a little nervous uploading this, because It's my first time trying anything like this, but I figure it'll be an interesting experience... It's a new experience, so it's like an art adventure, in a way. :) I've also made some changes to the coloring on several images on this calendar. The most notable changes are listed below.

[link] has better differentiation between foreground and background.
[link] has improved coloring and a slightly brighter sky.
The coloring on [link] has been changed to make it much more dramatic.
The coloring on [link] is a bit smoother and has a bit better balance.

Please let me know your opinions on this. Now that I've done it once, I might make this a tradition...

Onward to 2011!

Always Summer Here

Finished some more art. :)
I saw a contest about winter and summer here on DA, and it gave me a neat idea for a picture.

It also gave me another piece to include glowing warm colors against a cool background. Light sources like that are always fun to work with.
The trees were an interesting challenge, too. :D

The glowing chest jewel was probably inspired by Dragonheart. That's still one of my favorite movies...

I tried to sketch this one out in a real rough manner, and make the line art last. This was going to be a quick sketch, but I ended up putting quite a bit of time into it again. Sketching can be really good practice, but when one turns out nicely, I want to make the final picture as good as I possibly can. :)

Finally finished!
From the initial sketch, every piece of this picture changed at least once. Overall, this was a very frustrating piece to work on. It's been a while since I've drawn an eastern style dragon, so I thought I'd give it a shot. It took several attempts to find a good pose and design, but I think it turned out well in the end. ;)

I've been trying out some different brush packs lately. The magic circles are stock from [link]
I usually try not to use stock like that, but those circles were too cool to pass up. My attempt was much less impressive, but maybe I'll design a few awesome ones someday.
Making that mirror was one of my favorite parts of this picture.

Also, I tried to show a smoother texture and more even distribution of detail on this picture, compared to my last few pieces.

I defined a few custom brushes when making this one, and have uploaded them here for people to use: [link]

I hope you enjoy it! :)

Scale Brush Pack 1

It's a two upload day from me!

On my latest dragon picture I decided to draw some fish-like scales to make a smooth texture. They were very uniform and started to get a bit tedious...
But then, I realized that I might be able to simplify the process and let Photoshop do a bit of work for me. So, I took the time to make a few brushes for some scale highlights. ;)

I do not recommend using these brushes to try and cover anything, but they work rather well when used to make small highlights, or as a base for other hand drawn scales in the area.
The first three brushes emphasize the middle scale, to try and show a bit of curvature underneath the scales.

I've had a bit of fun looking around at various brushes lately, but I haven't seen any scale brushes that don't act like stamps so I thought I'd share these with everyone.

Sadly, these brushes do not work with Photoshop 7.

---
As far as terms of use go, I'm rather easy going.
You can use them in your art, and on prints without restriction.
You may not repackage or redistribute these brushes without permission.
---

If you use them, citing me as a source or posting a link so I could see your work would be nice.

I hope you enjoy the brushes! :D

More art! Finally!
This one was a very frustrating piece for me. I got the idea for it around two years ago, while watching "Kemono no Souja Erin", but I didn't have the courage or technique to attempt it then. Apparently I do now, though. ;)
I tried to include a nice variety of creatures to make it more interesting, too. I used a few brushes from my brush pack when adding texture on this one. [link]

The main reason why this one was frustrating was because I accidentally deleted it halfway through, along with all my other Photoshop WIPs when I got overzealous cleaning up the files on my desktop. That wasn't much fun.
So, I started over on it, using a saved WIP like my new sketch and I'm glad I did.

It was a difficult piece, probably the most difficult that I've done, but it was very satisfying to complete it. :la:

ACEO ExiiinKa

After that last large picture, I wanted to make something small and quick. I've never done an ACEO before, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I might do more of these some time, but not immediately.
This is my part of one with :iconexiiinka:

This was much quicker than most of what I've made recently, and the scope of the picture isn't quite as grand, but it was a nice change of pace to do something small that didn't take weeks to complete. ;)

Next, I'm planning on doing some work on my costume for this year, and making some more art that will extend [link]
